#MMC100 Trophy Tour Stop 3: Ottawa, Ontario

The Canadian Hockey League’s 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup celebrations continued this past week in Ottawa, Ontario, the third stop on a season long tour visiting 17 CHL communities in eight different provinces.

The Ontario Hockey League’s 67’s were tour hosts on the third leg in the midst of their own milestone celebrations this season celebrating the club’s 50th anniversary.  The team brought the Memorial Cup to Ottawa’s Brian Kilrea Arena where players joined the legendary bench boss and arena namesake while mingling with minor hockey players from the Canterbury Minor Hockey Association.

The following day the puck dropped on another Saturday Showcase national broadcast on Sportsnet with the 67’s and visiting Barrie Colts.  Opening ceremony duties featured Colonel Pierre Huet joined by Master Corporal JPR Roussel and Master Corporal AL Gagne.  The Memorial Cup was brought out to centre ice for the proceedings and was later situated on the concourse for fans to enjoy.

Ottawa hosted an extended stay for the Memorial Cup with visits planned into the early part of the week beginning Monday with stops at The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 595.  Then on Tuesday, the Memorial Cup was brought to Canada’s Department of National Defence visiting men and women of service, and to Canada’s House of Commons on Parliament Hill where MPs representing CHL communities across the country had the opportunity to see the prestigious trophy and pose for photographs with their local team jersey.

Of note, the Honourable Geoff Regan, current Speaker of the House, posed with the Memorial Cup while wearing his Halifax Mooseheads jersey.  Former Saint John Sea Dogs President and current MP Wayne Long has his name engraved on the trophy from his 2011 victory.  Barrie MP John Brassard took two photos with the Memorial Cup including one with a Colts jersey and the other supporting the Oshawa Generals where his son, Matt Brassard, is a defenceman.
