#MMC100 Trophy Tour Stop 17: Niagara, Ontario

The Canadian Hockey League’s 100th Mastercard Memorial Cup celebrations continued this past week in the Niagara Region, the 17th and final stop on a season long tour visiting 17 CHL communities in eight different provinces.

The Niagara Region is home to the Ontario Hockey League’s Niagara IceDogs who play their home games in St. Catharines but proudly represent the entire area.  The final leg of the Memorial Cup Trophy Tour saw exactly that with community wide hospitality and visits that stretched from the arena to Niagara Falls and places in between.

One of the first stops on the tour included the aforementioned Niagara Falls with breathtaking views and a spectacular photo opportunity with major junior hockey’s staple and one of Canada’s most iconic destinations.  The Memorial Cup also visited historic Ridley College renowned for their athletics program and deep roots in St. Catharines.  Other local attractions visited included Fort George, the headquarters for the British Army during the War of 1812, and a tour through Niagara-on-the-lake’s wine country complete with a stop at Gretzky Estates.

The Memorial Cup was also on hand for the IceDogs’ final game of the regular season featured on Sportsnet’s Saturday Showcase.  Fans had the opportunity to see the trophy up close on the concourse during intermission and pose for photos.  The tour’s final stops included visits to students of all ages beginning with Lockview Public School, and ending with Brock University where it surprised a Sports Management class and the Badgers Men’s Hockey Team with 2012 champion Patrick Volpe.
